There is a difference between having the gifts of the Spirit and having a relationship with the Spirit. The former enlivens while the latter demands mortification and self-denial. The degree to which you mortify your flesh is the degree to which the Holy Spirit can gain ascendancy in your life. He must increase, but I must decrease (John 3 vs. 30).
